MERJ MACED Loan Paid!

Thanks to the magical performances of Mud Pi and Mitch Barrett, donations from many MERJ community members, and the generous match of an anonymous donor, we were able to raise $885.52 and pay the balance of the MACED loan from our former farmers’ market/community center project down to a little over $1,200.

On December 1, 2011, we sent out a holiday/New Year plea to help pay off the remaining balance with a special matching challenge of my own. When I issued my challenge to members of our diverse sustainability community to match my 1,416 electronic MERJ and Garden Party public service announcements since 2003 with actual dollars, I never anticipated the incredible response that we would receive.

Over the holidays we received $306 in donations from generous supporters. Then trough an unexpected and timely $500 match challenge after New Year, we were able to meet the match in additional donations in less than 27 hours and raise an additional $1,005. Raising a total of $1,311 in a little over a month, which paid off the MERJ MACED loan today!

This is an astounding and humbling outpouring of generosity and thoughtfulness of friends and family near and far, and I am personally overwhelmed with gratitude and awe. I also have renewed hope in humanity, which is a beautiful way to start the New Year. Thanks so much to each and everyone one of you who have contributed time, money, and/or encouragement throughout the past decade of MCAT/MERJ activities.

We also value and appreciate the folks at the Mountain Association for Community Ecnonomic Development (MACED) for their patience and flexibility in paying off this debt from the past. We are particularly grateful to Carol Lamm who encouraged and stood up for us when it seemed like others in the community had written us off. We look forward to starting off 2012 debt-free so we can imagine and create exciting new opportunities for sustainable community in the MERJ area.

Newsletter Survey Results & Follow-up

In April 2011, MCAT/MERJ requested feedback about potentially resurrecting an alternative local newsletter/newspaper source in the MERJ area, and 24 community members confirmed that such a resource was needed and that they were willing to participate in its production.

More than half the survey respondents had read previous issues of "Act Locally," and 75% agreed that the MERJ area needs an alternative local newsletter/newspaper.

Most people preferred an electronic newsletter format, and about half of the respondents indicated at least some level of interest in helping produce a local newsletter.  As follow-up to this survey, MCAT/MERJ now requests feedback about the title, format, timing, and distribution for the e-newsletter: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3QRJ6HD.

We plan to contact and possibly convene the folks who expressed some level of initial interest in newsletter production, so if anyone else would like to participate, you can enter your contact information on the survey or email me directly to be included on the list.  Thanks for your input and interest in a local sustainable community newsletter.  Stay tuned for further developments!
